Job Summary:
The Museum A/V Tech is responsible for the management and technical support of complex media technology systems. This role ensures seamless operation, maintenance, and enhancement of audiovisual systems to support exhibitions and special events, while also staying updated on emerging technologies and contributing to budget development and staff training.
Key Responsibilities:
- Media Technology Management:
- Oversee the ongoing operation and maintenance of media technology systems in exhibit galleries.
- Perform morning start-up and evening shutdown procedures, including physical walkthroughs and communication of observations to the Chief Curator/Head of Exhibitions.
- Maintenance and Inventory:
- Replace consumable supplies (e.g., projector lamps, color wheels) and clean components (e.g., projector lenses, filters).
- Maintain inventory of consumable supplies and manage scheduled cleaning.
- Technical Support:
- Provide AV technical support for special events and programs, including microphones, sound systems, video monitors/media walls, and control systems.
- Maintain test benches, workstations, rack-based signal distribution, and central media control rooms.
- Installation and Training:
- Install and terminate audio, video, and control cables as needed.
- Train NMAD staff on specific AV technical equipment.
- Technology Advancements:
- Stay informed on evolving audiovisual and IT technologies.
- Advise on strategies to integrate new technologies and trends.
- Budget and Financial Management:
- Contribute to the development of annual operating budgets and staff requirements for MML services.
- Assist in budget preparation for funded exhibits and special projects.
- Maintain financial records and approve purchases for MML services.
- Collaborative Planning:
- Regularly meet with NMAD staff to enhance and maintain media and lighting systems for exhibitions and public programs.
- Technical Specifications and Contracts:
- Develop, write, and oversee technical specifications for service contracts, including state-of-the-art technologies related to multimedia and interactive systems.
- Technical Advisory:
- Provide expert advice on design, cost, and maintenance of media and lighting elements to project managers, curators, conservators, and other staff.
Qualifications:
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in a related field (e.g., Audio/Visual Technology, Computer Science, Engineering).
- Experience: 2-3 years of experience in exhibition and public program AV systems.
- Skills:
- Strong verbal and written communication.
- Excellent organizational and time management skills.
- Experience with project management and multitasking.
- Proficiency in technical fields related to audiovisual systems, databases, lighting, and show control.
- Knowledge of current and outdated technologies relevant to the role.
- Understanding of collection care, preservation issues, and ADA regulations.
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work effectively with management and teams.
